Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, is the largest beer festival on earth. It’s an event on a huge scale, with massive beer tents, pretzels and of course beer glasses – 1 Litre Steins (“Maas” in Bavaria).
There are more than a dozen beer tents, and the atmosphere all of them is just incredible. Call it controlled mayhem, the “Beerfest” is a party like no other.
The original Oktoberfest was held in Munich on 18th October 1810, to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
Today, Oktoberfest is an enormous world-famous festival, visited by over 6 million people every year.
Oktoberfest runs for 3 weekends from late September until the 1st weekend of October.
Visitor numbers average around 6 million, with almost 600,000 people celebrating Oktoberfest on one Saturday alone.
Visitors guzzle down an average of 1.1 litres each during the two-week event. In 2010, a record 7 million Litres of beer was consumed at Oktoberfest.
