Songkran Water Festival
The Songkran water festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13th to 15th April. In some parts of Thailand, such as Phuket, Songkran celebrations begin on the 12th April
One of the best places to celebrate the Sonkran Water Festival is in Patong, Phuket, where a massive 3-day long street party kicks off on April 12th.
Everyone gets soaking wet, a welcome relief from the heat – April is the hottest time of the year in Thailand. Thai people and tourists alike take part in massive water fights, and even the fire brigade gets in on the action using water cannons to cool down the crowd.
If you're celebrating Songkran in Patong, Phuket, it's highly recommended to party on Bangla Road. Water pistols are on sale everywhere and you can even buy ice-water from the street-side for around 10Baht – it cuts right through people's shirts and brings a smile from any crowd!
You won't stay dry from the moment you leave your hotel, so wear a t-shirt you don't mind getting wet and dirty.
While Thailand is probably best known for the Sonkran festival, it's also celebrated in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and by the Dai people in Yunnan, China.
