Burning Man Festival: Media & Press: Thirsty Swagman
Burning Man Festival
Every year, around 50,000 people gather to create Black Rock City in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.
Burning Man is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, in the USA.
Each year a theme (eg. "Rites of Passage" in 2011) defines the festival, and participants are encouraged to follow the Ten Principles of Burning Man which are:
1. Radical Inclusion
2. Gifting
3. Decommodification
4. Radical Self-reliance
5. Radical Self-expression
6. Communal Effort
7. Civic Responsibility
8. Leaving No Trace
9. Participation
10. Immediacy
Burning Man isn't anything like your usual festival - it's more of a city, wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the event. The perimeter fence, set out in a pentagon, is over 7 miles (11 kilometres) long.
The Burning Man itself is over 12 meters (40 feet) tall, and is set alight on the Saturday night before Labor Day.
The event starts on the Monday before, and ends on the American Labor Day holiday.
