5 tips to end that Travel Argument

If you've ever travelled with a partner, you've heard these one before:

  • What do you mean "I think we're lost"?
  • I don't want to go there
  • You spent how much?
  • Are you telling me it's lost?
  • I saw you looking at him / her

The next few hours are, of course, ones to remember.

So before your next trip with the other half, here are 5 tips to make your trip pure bliss.

I don't want to go there

Travel arguments often begin before you even get going, with one of the biggest problems being agreeing on the destination.

Solution: Make sure the trip includes something for both of you. If you want different things out of a holiday, make sure you strike a balance between your interests.

Organise a few activities separately. And if you can't settle arguments before you go, it's probably a good idea to cancel the trip. :-)

What do you mean "I think we're lost"?

Map reading is a common cause of arguments when travelling. And neither men nor women like to admit they can't read a map or use a GPS.

Solution: Be honest about your map-reading / GPS-using skills and don't be too proud to give control to your partner. Share the duties and both agree if you're going in the right direction - at least then you can share the blame.

You spent how much?

Money woes can lead to some serious fall-outs and even separate flights home. Ask most travelling couples what they argue about the most on their trip and they'll say money.

Solution: Realise that most travel budgets will be broken at some point in the trip and don't stress too much when it does.

Set aside a little cash over and above your budget and then surprise your other half by splashing out on something like a nice meal. Or a bill if they shout the bar after a dozen wines…

And remember the holy grail of travel tips: When packing for your trip, lay out all the money and clothes. Take twice as much money, and half as many clothes.

Are you telling me it's lost?

If you lose something while travelling, the classic dialogue which turns a discussion into an argument goes as follows: Person 1: "Where did you last see it?" Person 2: "If I knew that then it wouldn't be lost, would it?"

Losing or forgetting something can be very stressful, with the tension of the situation boiling over to a bust-up.

Solution: Try to stay calm if something valuable looks like it's lost. Rather than lose your cool with your partner, get them to help retrace footsteps, ask around and search places you last saw the item. Two heads are better than one – as long as they're calm ones.

I saw you looking at him / her

This one's the biggie – the old green-eyed monster rearing its ugly head.

Infidelity or even a harmless flirt can be a big issue with some travelling couples, especially with most holidays featuring more flesh and alcohol than in normal life.

Solution: Taking a trip with a partner can make or break a relationship, and it goes without saying that an honest, open relationship is the best to deal with jealousy and trust.
