The original full moon party was celebrated on the beach in Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand, in 1985 by a small group of travellers who found the moon to be at its biggest and brightest on the island.

Today, over 20,000 travellers attend full moon parties in Thailand every full moon evening.

While often described as the ultimate party experience, it's considered a dangerous tourist destination due to the wild partying and high alcohol consumption.

Many tour operators now offer trips to Thai full moon parties.
