La Tomatina Festival

La Tomatina, or the Tomato Festival, is a festival in Valencia (Spain) where participants throw tomatoes at each other.

The La Tomatina festival has been a tradition in the town of Buñol since 1944 or 1945. Nobody is certain how the event began, although one popular theory is that disgruntled people of Buñol attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration.

It was enjoyed enough that it was repeated every year. The festival was temporarily banned under Francisco Franco for having no religious significance, but returned in the 1970s.

It is held every last Wednesday in August, during a week of festivities in Buñol, Spain. Festivities begin at 10am and end approx 1 hour after.
