Until 2012, the La Tomatina festival was a free event open to any visitor – this changed in 2013 when it became a ticketed event.
Visitors must now pre-purchase La Tomatina tickets, which are allocated by the city of Buñol and limited to 20,000 – of which 15,000 are sold online and 5,000 allocated to Buñol residents free of charge.
While many people have welcomed the decision to limit the number of visitors to the festival, it has also drawn criticism from travellers hoping to include the event in their itinerary. With the number of visitors reaching 50,000 in previous years, the new limit will leave tens of thousands of would-be visitors with no access.
However, the Buñol council has cited security and safety as their primary concern, as the high number of visitors previously resulted in many injuries and extreme crowding. It is also hoped the money raised by the entry fee will help the town cover the annual bill for the festival; quoted to be around half a million Euro.
Tickets are 10 Euro per person (2014 price) and require validation with full passport ID prior to the event at stations set up in Buñol.
