So, you may have split up with that man/woman you thought was the answer to your dreams? Or, maybe just that person that you stuck around with for a while… in the hope of them eventually turning into the answer to your dreams.
People have long pondered on the cure for the broken hearted.
One cure is: packing your bags and embarking upon a frivolous trip to a sundrenched and exotic location.
A location where your former life of couch dwelling and fights over who does the dishes are as distant and as far removed from reality as the sound of the ocean heard through the shell. And, there will be plenty of those where you’re heading. Oh, AND cocktails and cabanas and music and enough beautiful people to make your heart skip a beat – all in the celebration of single life!
Here are Thirsty Swagman’s top three locations for the newly single traveller:
Ibiza is the world’s undisputable mecca to the party lifestyle. It’s the pulse of all things hot, sweaty and sinful. There are THE beats, the nightlife the sand. There’s nothing between you and the rhythm of the night… so, make like J LO and go get some crazy ass braids and sarong stat!
Remember, the aim of a stay in Ibiza is about getting SO sun kissed you’re likely to be mistaken for a local. Skin cancer? To someone from Ibiza it’s as real as the Easter Bunny. Besides, nothing banishes cares and regrets quite like that inimitable holiday glow.
Ibiza is a Spanish island over 5 times the size of Mykonos (more on that later) and 10 times (yes ten times) the size of Manhattan. So…. just think about what you can get up to with ALL that space – there are veritable acres of beach and masses of tourists to lose yourself in!
Indeed, Ibiza is the summer club scene capital of the world. Famous (or infamous) clubs to visit are aptly names Space, Privilege and Amnesia. That last one would be great for any person who agrees that the clinician in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” made a great (if only fictional) contribution to society.
Indeed, ignorance CAN be bliss. And you’ll find it will all become a blur thanks to Ibiza. There are countless boat and pool parties on the island to wind up at… perhaps to while away a lazy afternoon enjoying azure waters in a (tiny teeny bikini) in a recovery session from all that hedonistic mischief you’ve been getting up to.
Sun bleached facades, turquoise horizons as far as the eye can see and Mediterranean hospitality. You’ll find it all on the island of Mykonos, Greece. However, you will also find the ultimate place to let lose and enjoy your new freedom!
At night the idyllic, picturesque surrounds transform into a fantastical party playground. There’s a riveting energy and cosmopolitan vibe. Stylish bars and nightspots are in abundance, ripe for the picking. In the day you can relax on the secluded northern beaches of the island.
Or, if you simply don’t want to stop the party for a moment you can live the adventure of a lifetime in the south of the island. The choice if yours: you can Jet Ski, parasail, windsurf or horseback ride. With all those activities you won’t find a single spare second to reflect on your single status. And, throw in all those hot bodies that litter the beaches and you’ll be walking on a cloud.
What are the main attractions in Mykonos (APART from the thriving club scene)? Well, delights for the eyes and senses simply abound in this gem of the Aegean, keep in mind it is by far the most visited island by tourists in the region – and for good reason.
A must-see is Little Venice (a coastal district and medieval town) that is home to one of the most recognized landmarks of Mykonos – the windmills. Dating back to the 16th century, they are a delightful sight to behold. As are the pastiche of delightfully multi-coloured two and three-storey terrace houses that line the seashore at the edge of the town. It all creates a SPECTACULAR vista for onlookers, particularly at sunset. The perfect backdrop to enjoy a cocktail…or ten!
If destinations were girls, the island of Hvar in Croatia would be the new “it girl” on the scene. With crystal blue waters, fancy restaurants and the likes of Prince Harry and Beyonce as devotees, the location has a lot to boast. Its nightlife is astounding with an almost around the clock array of parties occurring from July to September every year.
There are vast arrays of all-night beach parties as well as extravagant clubs and venues. You’ll find plenty of cobbled stone streets to get lost in… and who knows where they might lead? Perhaps to someone’s super yacht and an invite aboard?
There is a buzzing social hub in the centre of the city – Hvar pays ultimate homage to the café lifestyle. Enjoy fine cuisine? You’ll find it here. A bald Irish lady once sang “I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant but nothing compares to you.” Eat a meal at a one of the many five star options in Hvar and you’ll be wondering just how crazy Sinead really is.
And, if you really want a distraction well there is NOTHING quite like shopping. Shop til you drop in Hvar with a boutique selection to rival Milan. Should you ever find yourself tiring JUST A LITTLE of such frivolous pursuits then you can look to the rich historical and architectural beauty of this city for the fodder to fulfil a truly intrepid soul. There are fortresses, cathedrals, a very famous arsenal, monasteries, churches, many historical bridges and even the ruins of an ancient city to explore.
