What’s the best thing that Italy has to offer? People may argue the answer to that question, but the one thing they all agree on – Italy will steal your heart.

Head to Italy and you’re sure to become awestruck by the architecture, captivated by the rich culture, and left drooling for another portion of that incredible pizza or gelato.

But one great aspect of Italy’s culture that deserves more attention, are the festivals. Italy pumps out literally hundreds of them every year, each being grander and more exhilarating than the last.

Ivrea, a small city in Italy’s north, is one town that really knows how to throw a party – literally!

Head to Ivrea for their annual “Battle of the Oranges”, a wild medieval festival that dates back to the 12th century.

Although the exact origins of the event are unknown, two things are clear – it represents the city’s liberation, and it’s one-hell-of a good time!

Just check out this incredible video of the event.

Battle of the Oranges

The Orange Throwing festival, or “Carnevale di Ivrea” as it is known locally, is wildly unique in that every participant plays an actual medieval role in the battle. The main being the role the local Joan of Arc, Violetta – a defiant young girl who is said to have started a revolt against the city’s tyrant.

Roles during the event include tyrants and even representatives of the French army. All participants register to be in organised teams and the oranges act as substitutes for any swords or battle gear used in the Medieval Era.

Everyone loves a good food-fight; all you need is a band of crazy mates to make a team with.
