Single and looking… out for my best interests, for the next best travel destination and for a good bar to down an ice-cold beer.
The days of relationships seem to be deteriorating faster than Charlie Sheen’s dignity and it’s never been so much fun. Has anyone ever told you lately that 30 is the new 21? Well they couldn’t be any more right.
I think it’s fairly safe to say the “Institution of Marriage” is next to dead. It’s somewhat of a seismic shift – and any happily married couples out there are either new to the marriage scene, or a rare breed (and good on you if you can pull it off!)
For the rest of us these days, it seems that a new social trend has arrived. People no longer seek conventional lifestyles. More and more people are actively choosing to take the single path and are more than happy with their new single identity. They want to focus more on their careers, or to see the world, and either don’t want kids.
For many, this decision is the road to a clearer, more independent lifestyle, where you own every choice you make, and can work on your best interests without any unwanted influence from others. So then what? What are people doing with all their free time and energy? Is it safe to say that people spend their spare time working more, watching more T.V. or hitting the gym?
I think that these people, and myself included, are finding themselves in the birth of a new type of relationship – a relationship with life. It’s a relationship that is just as time-consuming as any other, except instead of working your plans around other people’s plans – it’s solely about balancing everything you want in life.
This has given rise to a whole new generation of young people that want to travel more and just plain enjoy life. Want to take a year off every-day life and head to London? No worries. Feel like taking a big Euro trip with the boys? Just pick a date!
Choosing to be single IS a lifestyle now, and the lifestyle of being a single-traveller is just one trend stemming from the new social development. It’s the road to a life of hedonism, self-discovery and cultural development.
Some will never know how spiritually enlightening it can be to drink a coconut cocktail by yourself or with some mates as you take in a warm Caribbean sunset, or of the character building moments you can have when you take on the challenging Inca Trail in breath-taking and mind-boggling South America.
In fact, whether coincidence or not, this drift seems perfectly timed with the rising trend of people heading on organised tours around the world.
New tour operators are popping up each year and these companies are now making it easier and safer for people to travel by themselves, especially for females who wish to travel solo or in small groups. They also allow those adventurous travellers to have the best inside knowledge about the sights of their desired holiday destinations. Of course at Thirsty Swagman we believe that the finest sights and all the best moments are lived inside the local bars and clubs.
So never be afraid to veer off the conventional path, and definitely don’t feel guilty for feeling good about it.
I for one am loving it. Every. Single. Minute of it.
