Is this Beer Festival Better than Oktoberfest?
Oktoberfest in Munich has a lot of great qualities – it offers great beer and food, incredible entertainment (and we’re not just talking about the people-watching), it’s easily accessible, and, let’s face it, it’s the mother of all German beer festivals. But don’t bow down just yet! Even beer festival royalty comes with its fair share of downsides—many say Oktoberfest is too expensive, too “touristy,” too traditional. Well we hear you, beer drinkers! If only there was a beer festival better than Oktoberfest.
*cue dream sequence*
But what if we told you there was another awesome, enormous, exciting beer festival that’s possibly better than Oktoberfest? One with the great beer, food, and accessibility of Munich’s Oktoberfest, but with almost zero tourists, a much crazier party in the beer tents, and easy to get beer tent reservations for?
Ja! It’s true! Such a beer festival does exist and it’s just a couple hours from Munich, at that. We’re talking about the Stuttgart Beer Festival and you should’ve been planning your trip there like yesterday.

The Stuttgart Beer Festival
Locally known as Cannstatter Volksfest, the Stuttgart Beer Festival is another of Germany’s world class beer festivals and, as it turns out, it’s the world’s second largest just behind Oktoberfest. (And, pssst, those who have been to both always say Stuttgart is the more kickass of the two.)
Where Oktoberfest in Munich has rules determining, among other things, how much traditional oom-pah music must be played, the Stuttgart Beer Festival has laser productions, big screens, and modern hits being played on the Alp horn. Plus, you can’t go wrong with guys in beards playing ZZ Top covers on their electric guitars. Where Oktoberfest has overwhelming crowds made up increasingly of foreigners, the Stuttgart Beer Festival is one giant local’s bash with the occasional, and incredibly excited, tourist thrown in for good measure.
Where Oktoberfest is mostly a beer drinking event, the Stuttgart Beer Festival offers much more—fully stocked bars in each of the tents, dedicated liquor tents, shots and cocktails and wine, and even a beer tent with an elevated rotating bar. Does your Munich beer festival have that? Not to mention, the beer tents at the Stuttgart Beer Festival stay open much later. At Stuttgart your night will go from sleepy to celebration in record time. You’ll see for yourself, the birthplace of Mercedes and Porsche knows a thing or two about getting you where you want to be in a hurry.
You’ll pay less to eat, drink, and sleep in Stuttgart but still have plenty to do outside the tents (should you want to explore). Plus, Stuttgart’s prime location makes for a great jumping off point around Germany and beyond.
We think it goes without saying that the Stuttgart Beer Festival is one amazing PAR-TAY you shouldn’t miss. Is this beer festival better than Oktoberfest? Come visit, and judge for yourself.
But we’ll let you be the judge! Check out our Stuttgart Beer Festival tours and join us at the party!
